Driving for Uber, Lyft or another platform in Houston? Begin tax preparation with a complete picture of your driving income and business records. An app summary alone may not contain everything your preparer needs.
Yes. The IRS says gig income is reportable even when no information form arrives. Gather platform annual summaries, Forms 1099-K and 1099-NEC when issued, tips and records of other payments. Ask your preparer to reconcile these records so the same earnings are not counted twice.
Separate personal activity from business activity. Keep the original documents behind your totals rather than submitting unexplained estimates. Vehicle deductions depend on your circumstances and the method you qualify to use; discuss your records with your preparer before choosing a method.
Net earnings from self-employment of $400 or more generally trigger a federal filing requirement. Self-employed workers may also need estimated tax payments. If you have both a job and gig income, additional withholding from your wages may be an option. Your income, expenses and household tax situation determine the calculation.
Create one folder per tax year, then group documents by platform and expense category. Note missing statements, any IRS letters and whether you have already filed that year's return. Tell Aaiss if you drove for several platforms, changed vehicles or moved during the year. This helps us identify follow-up questions before preparation begins.
